While many people believe that GMO produce and processed foods are potentially dangerous, or even toxic, few people stop to think about the health dangers posed by food we think is good for us.

But as this video by Countdown with Fresh points out, many of the foods we believe are health can be dangerous if you eat too much of them.

Apples – The saying is “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” but if you accidentally eat too many apple seeds, you may end up in hospital. That’s because apple seeds contain a compound which is can be broken down into cyanide in the body. But don’t panic yet – there are not enough seeds in a single apple to do harm.

Rhubarb- Most often used in strawberry pie, this plant is potentially harmful if you eat the wrong part. While the stalks can be cooked and eaten, the leaves contain oxalic acid – which can cause coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.

Almonds– Most people don’t know that there are different kinds of almonds – bitter and sweet. Sweet almonds are safe to eat, but avoid bitter almonds, as they contain cyanide. Fortunately, if you live in North America, all almonds sold in grocery stores are sweet almonds.

Red Kidney Beans – Cooked kidney beans are perfectly safe to eat, uncooked red kidney beans contain a toxin called phytohemagglutinin, which can cause diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting – not pleasant!

Nutmeg – Historically, nutmeg was used to end unwanted pregnancies, and in more recent years has been used by inmates in prison to get high. That’s because nutmeg contains myristicin, which can cause nausea, dehydration, and even hallucinations in high enough doses

Tuna – Although tuna is thought of as a healthy, high protein snack, eating too much tuna could be bad for your health because of the amount of mercury they absorb in their bodies. Too much tuna could cause mercury poisoning.

Potato– potato leaves and stems contain stolenin, which if eaten in large quantities can lead to coma. The same chemical is found in green potatoes, so to stay safe, don’t eat potatoes that have gone bad or are green under the skin
